I’ve enjoyed downtown Wilmington’s July Fourth firework shows from a number of different locations over the years. There were friend’s rooftop patios, bars, boats and even the Riverwalk. No matter the location the show is spectacular. I feel a renewed sense of love for my city seeing all the familiar faces out and about and the firework displays lighting up the sky.
This year I want to share some of my favorite spots for libations along with some of the best spots for July 4th festivities and fireworks. I certainly won’t be lugging my own cooler around all day and I know you won’t either!
Cloud 9: Featuring the White Claw Slushy
If you are tired of fighting for firework spots on the Riverwalk you may be doing it wrong. Head to Cloud 9’s rooftop bar and secure your reservation ahead of time. Cloud 9 has a White Claw Slushie this summer and it may pair perfectly with the July 4th heat.
Riverfront Park Grand Opening: Featuring the Bloody Mary
Riverfront Park is having its grand opening all day July 4th from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. For the full schedule, check out the Facebook event. One of the best dive bars in walking distance is the Goat & Compass where you will find a perfect Bloody Mary and fantastic beers on tap.
Carolina Beach: Featuring a Frozen Watermelon Margarita
The Carolina Beach Boardwalk fireworks kick off Friday, July 2nd and you’ll want to head to the Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar beforehand. It’s a perfect bike ride away. Grab one of the Tiki Bar’s frozen watermelon margaritas that taste exactly like summer.
Surf City Fireworks: Featuring the Beach Blitzer Spritzer
The fireworks in Surf City are always a day early — this year on Saturday, July 3 enjoy the fireworks from boats or beach chairs, but be sure to grab a drink at The Corner first. Right now they are featuring their own take on an Aperol spritzer and you can even order it with a Prosecco floater.
Southport Festivities: Featuring Activities and The Sake Mule
Thank goodness everything has returned to normal in Southport. July 4th festivities are back on as if they never left and this Nicholas Sparks town goes big. All weekend find something to do at the NC Fourth of July Festival from the arts and crafts festival, firefighter competition, truck show, live music, flotilla, and a very patriotic naturalization ceremony. Oh yeah, and did we mention the salute to veterans? The firework show? The famous July 4th parade once famously attended by Josh Duhamel and Fergie? Grab a Sake Mule at some point at Cafe Koa downtown.
