Kinston

This may be one of the more popular day trip destinations for Wilmingtonians. With a minor league ball park and famous restaurant, you could spend a day, or even two, exploring Kinston, North Carolina. Catch a game at Grainger Stadium, have a beer at Mother Earth Brewing and explore Kinston’s downtown. Finish up the day at Vivian Howard’s The Chef and The Farmer, made famous by its run on the PBS Emmy-winning series, “A Chef’s Life.”

Southport

You’ll recognize Southport from the silver screen and the backdrop for movies like “A Walk To Remember,” and “Safe Haven.” It has all the charm and character from a novel — the dreamy, seaside Southern town. Grab a grouper salad sandwich at Provision Co. and grab a beer from the fridge on the honors system. Take in the views of the waterway before strolling through downtown antique shops. The NC Maritime Museum is a great starting point to learn more, too. The best way to take in Southport is to sit on one of the many swings around the water and simply take it in.

Bald Head Island

Catch a ferry to Bald Head Island for the day from Southport and explore one of North Carolina’s hidden treasures. This private island has no vehicles, so rent a golf cart for the day to zip around the island or ride bikes. Once there, you can explore Old Baldy lighthouse and learn about its incredible history, go on a nature tour or dine at Delphine’s before taking the ferry home.

Swansboro

There are dozens of activities to pack into your day trip in this seaside fishing village — and we mean that as a compliment. Swansboro is a lovely place to stroll, slow down and explore a new place. One of the best state parks is nearby at Hammocks Beach, where you can ferry to wildlife galore. Nearby Emerald Isle is also a beautiful site to take in. In downtown Swansboro, grab a beer at the Irish Pub, Church Street Irish Pub & Deli. Then shop downtown for arts, and sight-see at the local antique shops before loading up on candy and ice cream at Candy Edventure.
