There is so much to do and see in downtown Wilmington you’ll truly need a lifetime to take it all in. But whether you are passing through or have just settled in as a resident, we compiled our favorite places to live, eat, play and see during your time in North Carolina’s Port City.
Neighborhoods We Love
Downtown is a wellspring of wonderful neighborhoods. Ask any resident if they enjoy living downtown and you will likely get an enthusiastic answer — many are zealots about downtown dwelling.
Check out Carolina Place, home to young families and artists with a nearby park and historic cemetery to explore. The South Front District has some new construction with historic roots, plus plenty of walkable attractions like restaurants and a salt cave.
Where to Eat
Where to eat downtown is simple — if there is an “Open” sign just go on in. The food is wonderful just about everywhere, we mean it.
For a romantic getaway head to our little French cafe, Caprice Bistro. The upstairs bar loft is considered one of the coziest places in town.
For a fix of pub food, check out Copper Penny (featured on Diner’s, Drive-Ins, and Dives) and Front Street Brewery. If fancy grilled cheese is your thing, don’t leave without trying Crust Kitchen and Cocktails.
Want to eat with celebrities? Movie stars filming in town generally make a stop at manna for drinks and a multi-course meal. It’s a splurge, but a meal you are likely to not forget.
Looking for hidden gems? We love the Latin food with a Southern twist at Savorez, the wacky sandwiches at Detour Deli and the family meals at Cousins Deli.
Go Drink
Wilmington is home to more than a dozen breweries and a number are located downtown. Check out our brewery guide here. Make a point to stop in and check out Edward Teach Brewing, Flytrap Brewing and New Anthem Beer Project.
For craft cocktails grab a drink at The Blind Elephant or Tails Piano Bar.
We love an adventure on a downtown trolley pub, cycling, and drinking your way through the city.
Go Have Fun
Get your walking shoes on and stroll up and down the Riverwalk. It’s free and is the best way to take in the scenery. From there, jump on a river cruise to see the downtown riverfront from a new vantage point and take in a history lesson.
Theater shows and movie screenings at the historic Thalian Hall never seem to disappoint.
Also, be sure to check out Clued Up — the worldwide interactive mystery game sensation that has made its way to the Port City.
For Families
Be sure to grab ice cream at Kilwins and visit the Wilmington Train Museum. Make a trip across the river to check out the Battleship North Carolina. Greenfield Lake is worth exploring with its playground, trails and paddleboats.
Shopping
Head to Castle Street to explore the different antique shops and vintage stores. From there, The Cotton Exchange is a one-stop-shop with a dozen vendors tucked inside the historic cotton warehouse.
Old Books on Front is a special place where readers are tempted to stay all day.
