From River Bluffs south to RiverLights, soak up the best of coastal living in these master-planned developments.
Wilmington has two newly developed communities along the Lower Cape Fear River. Both have become destinations for retirees hoping to capitalize on all Wilmington has to offer.
River Bluffs, Castle Hayne
Looking for a home under an oak canopy? You’ll find exactly what you are looking for at River Bluffs seated on an actual river bluff in Castle Hayne, just a few minutes north of downtown Wilmington. Developers kept trees and wildlife in mind while designing this community, so you’ll find roads winding around clusters of old trees for sake of preservation.
There are walking trails, a kayak launch, boat docks, shaded dog park, gym, pool, farmer’s market and a restaurant (currently suspended due to Covid-19.)
Find town homes, garden homes and a range of home sizes in eight different neighborhoods within the community.
Our favorite things about this community for retirees?
Beyond the attention to detail, this community has a great reputation for being inclusive. Newcomers say they find meeting new people and connecting with neighbors easy at River Bluffs.
What’s nearby?
One of the greatest advantages of this river hideaway is its proximity to downtown Wilmington and the airport. Be at the Wilmington airport in just minutes and find downtown dining and entertainment an eight-minute drive away.
One of the area’s biggest flower farms is nearby and open to the public. Check out Castle Hayne Farms to pick up a bouquet.
RiverLights, Wilmington
A 55+ Del Webb neighborhood, restaurants, shops, and a wine bar make RiverLights the perfect place for retirees. RiverLights includes custom builds, apartments, townhomes, and single-family homes. There are five miles of walking trails, a lake, pavilions, pools, and kayak slips.
At the center, find Marina Village full of coastal charm. The village includes an indoor golf experience, the Water + Color gallery for a sip-and-paint experience, and Shore Break Bike Rentals. The newly-opened The Woman’s Place offers birth and Lamaze classes and for retirees, there are grandparent courses as well.
Plenty of dining
There are currently two restaurants at RiverLights, but soon to be more. Smoke on the Water has one of the best views in Wilmington. Sit outside on a heated patio and enjoy fresh oysters and cocktails before diving into a brisket sandwich. At Magnolia Social Cafe, grab lattes and coffee, sweet treats, breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Their turkey wrap or the chicken and waffles are worth the calories — especially if you take a bike ride after.
Our favorite things about this community for retirees?
Options. There are plenty of options at RiverLights for homes big or small, custom or turn-key. For retirees hoping to spend plenty of time at the beach, Carolina Beach is a close drive. Downtown Wilmington is a short drive too. RiverLights has plans for a river taxi in the future, shuttling residents up the river to downtown — a beautiful and scenic way to see Wilmington.
