The year is wrapping up and so are a number of exciting film projects in our community! For many of us long-time locals, seeing the productions back up and running at both the studios and around familiar locations is a relief. For a few years there, we thought we had lost our status as Little Hollywood. Finally, though, projects are being filmed in Wilmington again.

Recently wrapped:

Welcome to Flatch (Season 2)

If you’ve seen mockumentary series like The Office or Parks and Rec, Fox TV brings that comedy style to Welcome To Flatch. This show just wrapped up season 2 and while the reviews on the show are mixed, Burgaw locals will notice much of the backdrop in the scenes. The new season was released in October.

The Summer I Turned Pretty (Season 2)

Prime Video’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” was a fast fan favorite and the network announced a second season which wrapped this summer. The Wilmington coastline is in the show so much, it basically stars as a lead character. It is unknown when season 2 will release, but it is expected sometime in spring or summer of 2023.

George & Tammy

The Showtime limited series George & Tammy delves into the private life of stars George Jones and Tammy Wynette. It stars Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, Michael Shannon and Steve Zahn. Filming took place in locations such as Thalian Hall and Legion Stadium. The first episode airs in December with six episodes in total.

Echoes

Netflix’s original film Echoes debuted in August and is about twin sisters who spent a lifetime swapping places until one sister suddenly goes missing. The haunting thriller was filmed throughout Wilmington, including in one of our favorite spots — Jess James Co. Vintage. Stream it now on Netflix.

In production:

The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat

This film from Walt Disney-owned studio Searchlight Pictures is based on the novel of the same name. The plot follows three best friends who call themselves “The Supremes” amongst a backdrop of turbulence. Uzo Aduba, Mekhi Phifer, Aunjanue Ellis, and Sanaa Lathan hold starring roles. Locals can see action around the intersection at Fifth and Castle where Rx Restaurant transformed into “Earl’s” for the film.

Pilots:

Jonas Pate’s latest gig:

Locals have speculated since the debut of “Outerbanks” whether its creator, who lives in Wilmington, would bring production here. The StarNews reported in October that creator Jonas Pate was casting extras for an untitled project in town. The pilot, which was filmed around Forest Hills and other locations, is about a high school rock band. We are excited to see when this show is picked up by a network.
