Top Reasons Newcomers Have for Relocating and Moving to Wilmington

It’s easy to notice the population in the greater Wilmington area swelling. But where are people moving from and why?

It’s easy to notice the population in the greater Wilmington area swelling. What’s more tricky to pinpoint is where are people moving from and why? For most of us, we are genuinely curious — what career opportunities are here for newcomers? What will happen to traffic?

So we decided to take these questions to some newcomers with Arth Real Estate. As we specialize in relocating people to the Wilmington area, it only seemed fitting to share some stories of newcomers.  (Because recent statistics show more people are coming to the area than leaving.)

Dawn and her husband Dana Pezzimenti are a great example of a broader trend — a family relocating to the area for eventual retirement. In 2021 the Pezzimentis had their list of potential places to relocate to narrowed down to the East Coast and Tennessee. While Buffalo, New York will stay home base for a few more years, they knew they needed to stay within a day’s drive of family, find somewhere affordable and with all four seasons.

“Actually, I came down for a whole week and stayed in Downtown Wilmington to explore,” said Dawn. “I loved it. I brought my bike with me and would get on my bike and go all over the place, pop into a restaurant and get a bite to eat, and bike along the river. It feels like the East Coast and has so many things we love about Buffalo.”

Moving In

Dawn connected with Andrea Arth through her Airbnb host. After sharing their list of things her family was looking for, the Pezzimentis bought a home in Brunswick Forest. They plan to split their time in Buffalo and Brunswick Forest until their upcoming retirement. For now, it is a countdown until they get to come next. Trips to Wilmington mean exploring new aspects of the area, lots of time outdoors and on the water, long walks, and dining at restaurants.

Like the Pezzimenti family, many are finding the area a central place they can easily visit family back home from and affordable for tax reasons (especially for those leaving New York and D.C.). Plus, Wilmington has many amenities and growing communities.
