There is nothing quite like biting into a strawberry or tomato moments after you plucked it from a garden. Luckily, our incredible community offers a number of u-pick farms where you can round up friends and family and do just that. So get outside and start picking your own fruits and veggies!
U-pick farms make for a great afternoon adventure for children and families where children can learn the value of agriculture. It can also be a wonderful active adult activity for all the canning or deep-freezing enthusiasts out there.
Here are a few farms to check out this spring and summer:
Lewis Farms
Located in the heart of Wilmington, Lewis Farms has spring strawberries, early summer blueberries, and some rambling blackberry bushes. Be sure to check out their nursery and ice cream too.
Carol Sue Farms
This Hampstead berry farm recently opened at their new location, complete with a classic red barn and nursery greenhouse. Enjoy pre-picked and u-pick strawberries from April-Mayish and blueberries from May-June. Don’t leave without grabbing their homemade strawberry ice cream!
Indigo Farms
Indigo Farms grows a number of items at their Calabash farm, including pick-your-own strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Check out their Facebook page for updates on what fruits and vegetables are in season, plus get information on their farmer’s markets.
Owens’ Blueberries
What started in Bolivia, North Carolina in the mid-1980s as a couple’s retirement project has turned into a 2-acre commercial blueberry farm. Maynard and Peggy Owens eventually planted a number of blueberry bush varieties and allow the public to come and pick their own each summer.
Taylor’s Blueberries
This mom-and-pop blueberry farm is a true homestead with animals and private (pre-scheduled) farm tours, plus blueberry picking. Pick from 2 acres of blueberry bushes in the Leland community.
Newberry’s Blueberries
Pluck blueberries ripe for harvest in Burgaw from May-June. Check their Facebook page for details.
