Can Biggers Market help change how markets and grocers work in the future?
When Biggers Market announced their move and subsequent name change two years ago, I wasn’t sure what was coming next. I love shopping the selection of North Carolina products, especially in the fall. I have grown attached to this sweet little place, even planning some recipes around it.
But, as their new location at 6250 Market Street opened as Biggers Market and it is certainly Bigger and Better, I am thrilled to see what possibilities are in store for this little slice of heaven!
Owner Sven changed the name from Port City Produce to Biggers Market thanks to a fun bit of family history. Biggers happens to be his mother’s maiden name and her father (Sven’s grandfather) started a produce business in the 1920s called Biggers Brothers.
These days Biggers is home to two locations (Market Street and one at 6458 Carolina Beach Road). They have a wide selection of local meats, eggs, produce, plants, drinks and more.
The future of community markets
Biggers is more than just a stop along the road for great produce and other products. It’s an experience and a way to find community. Whether you have a routine of grabbing hot boiled peanuts or you’re here for the live music, there is something for everyone.
Recently Biggers launched a Backyard Bar. There are dozens of local beers to sample, as well as wines, ciders and coffee. And next, Biggers has submitted plans to renovate a space adjacent to the market for a kitchen space. The plan is to prepare menu items for take-out or for dinners at their outdoor table. Menu items would feature different produce sold at the market.
Beyond loving this for our community, I think this has the potential to shape how markets and even grocery stores function in the future. Food is so closely tied to our lives — instead of racing through aisles with a cart, we can take time to browse local produce, listen to live music and even stop to eat or drink in the process. This is the best of European café culture and a celebration of American agriculture intersecting and I can’t wait to see what comes next.
