Read on to learn about our favorite grocery store hidden gems that may or may not be widely known in Wilmington!
We recently asked friends to share their favorite grocery stores with us, and we loved the responses. It was so exciting to see the cheerleading section for our locally-owned businesses and markets. We reached out again this week to poll followers on grocery store hidden gems and go-to items within local stores. Here are some hidden gems inside your favorite grocery stores, from cult-favorite deli subs, fuel points, senior discounts, and amazing pimento cheese.
Eagle Island’s Menagerie
Locally-owned favorite market Eagle Island has some of the best-acclaimed collard greens, pork, homemade cake, and just about any flavor of jam or preserves you can imagine. Also, be sure to try their oysters each oyster season.
PubSubs
This may be a bit more mainstream, but for those unfamiliar with Publix, this knowledge could be a game-changer. Publix subs, (or Pub Subs as they are affectionately known) are a great addition to your meal rotation. Choose from fresh bakery bread or wraps, add in any sort of meat in the deli (including fried chicken tenders), and Boar’s Head garlic pickles. Buffalo chicken tender subs are something to add to your bucket list.
Fuel points and senior discounts
There are plenty of savings to be found at Harris Teeter, one of North Carolina’s primary grocers. Be sure to scan your store card at checkout to get fuel points (count on about $1 of savings per gallon of gas.) Seniors over the age of 60 should head to Harris Teeter Thursday morning for a 5 percent discount.
Cheese at Trader Joe’s
Are you an Everything But The Bagel Seasoning stan? Love Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups? Nearly every Trader Joe’s item has its own following these days, but Wilmingtonians flock to TJ for cheese. Our Arth Real Estate poll showed there are plenty of cheese heads in Wilmington heading to Trader Joe’s for a treat.
Lowes Foods’ State Made Products
From barbecue sauces to North Carolina-grown peanuts, Lowes Foods promotes local, regional, and state products around their store.
